Why You Worry About What Others Think of You
As humans, our need to belong is strong.
Back in the day, it literally meant the difference between life and death. Being booted from the group meant having to go at the world alone.
Top that with our very human and normal questioning of our worth that is usually running in the background of our minds and you get a couple of pretty good reasons for wanting to be accepted and valued.
Here’s the deal though, it doesn’t matter what other people think about you. The other person is forming thoughts based on their experiences and background. They don’t really have anything to do with you.
When you hurt because of what they think or say about you it’s because you make their judgments mean something about you.
When you are troubled about what others might be thinking about you it’s because of what you are thinking about what they think of you.
The only thing that really matters is what you think of you. You can choose to dwell on what you think others think of you or you can focus on what you think of you.
I like to think that I like all of me - my perfectly imperfect self. I like to think that I like how much I grow and evolve every day. I like to think that I’m doing a pretty good job of being a human.
What do you think of you? It’s your call.
